Founded in 1987, ST is a new enterprise after the merger of SGS microelectronics in Italy and Thomson semiconductor in France. In May 1998, SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics changed its name to STMicroelectronics. The company has been publicly listed since 1994, and the shares of Italian French semiconductor have been listed on the New York Stock Exchange (trading code: STM), Pan European Paris Stock Exchange and Italian Milan Stock Exchange. Since its inception, the growth rate of Italian French semiconductor has exceeded the overall growth rate of semiconductor industry. Since 2005, STMicroelectronics has always been one of the five largest semiconductor companies in the world. The annual revenue in 2006 was US $9.85 billion, and the company's revenue in the first half of 2007 was US $4.69 billion.

The whole group has about 50000 employees, 16 advanced R & D institutions, 39 design and application centers, 13 major manufacturing plants, and 78 sales offices in 36 countries.

Chips from ST embedding the most advanced innovations are an essential part of products as diverse as cars and key fobs, giant factory machines and data center power supplies, washing machines and hard disks, and smartphones and toothbrushes.
